Hot Springs National Park
On March 4, 1941, Hot Springs National Park became the 18th national park in the United States. But, did you know it should have actually been the 1st national park. President Andrew Jackson, signed a legislation protecting the area of what is now Hot Springs National Park on April 20, 1832 but Congress never passed the legislation to maintain the site.
Hot Springs, AR developed rapidly without throughout the late 1800s, building up Victorian wooden bath houses, which were replaced in the 1920s with a more modern luxury spa experience, complete with marble walls and stained glass windows. Bathhouse row and Hot Springs, AR flourished through the early 1900s, but in 1960 interest began to decline. By 1985, seven of the eight bathhouses on the elegant bathhouse row had closed. On November 13, 1974, all of the bathhouses on Bathhouse row had been placed on the National Registrar of Historic Places and our under consideration for adaptive renovation to prevent decline of the mostly empty bathhouses.
